There are many different venues in and around the Richmond area to take in a live
performance, but none may be as versatile as The Modlin Center For The Arts. Located
just outside of downtown Richmond and nestled neatly onto the picturesque grounds
of the historic University Of Richmond lays The Modlin Center, a 165,000 square foot
multi-use performance center. The Modlin Center opened its doors in October 1996
and houses two state-of-the-art performance venues (The Camp Concert Hall and The
Alice Jepson Theatre). The University’s department of music, art ,art history, theatre
and dance as well as numerous galleries, and studios all call the venue home.
The Camp Concert Hall seats 600 and is used primarily for intimate up-close and
personal musical performances. The slightly smaller but more versatile Alice Jepson
Theatre is described in the press release as a “550-seat main stage theatre designed to
provide every audience member with a dazzling, intimate view.”
The upcoming year should be an exhilarating one for patrons of the arts as the
2009/2010 performance schedule has just been released, and the diversity of acts
set to grace the stage is quite noteworthy. There are 35 events scheduled for the
year, some of which include the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, American
Bluegrass Masters featuring legendary icons JD Crowe (banjo) and Bobby Osborne
(mandolin), the Band of the Irish Guards and the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The
season opener will be “The Trial of the Catonsville 9” by The Actors’ Gang, featuring
artistic director T im Robbins. Mr. Robbins will also be on hand to discuss this project
with the audience (subject to Mr. Robbins’ other professional commitments).
With so many exciting and different performances scheduled for the year ahead,
there is guaranteed to be something of interest for just about anyone who enjoys a live
performance. |
